I’m Kyra Mathews, an Indian woman and an English writer.
For years of my career, I have been considered “not a native English speaker” and therefore, less than my Western counterparts in terms of language, specifically within the advertising industry.
Despite language being used as a weapon against me, I believe that words should never be used as racist tools of domination and superiority, but bridges built with care and understanding.
In the attempt to reclaim both my mother tongue and chosen tongue while subverting an ugly narrative, I have channeled my anger into something that looks like catharsis - and is starting to feel a lot like it too.
This deeply personal project is ongoing, and will expand to include Hindi, Bengali and Urdu.
